Ilam Beyond the Clouds: A Local's Guide to Hidden Gems

Most travelers come to Ilam for the tea, but they often miss the soul of the district. As a family that has lived in Barbote for seven generations, we’ve seen the “hidden” side of Ilam that rarely makes it into the guidebooks.

If you’re planning a trip, here are the top 5 hidden gems you shouldn’t miss:

1. The Barbote Village Walk 🚶‍♂️

Right at our doorstep! Instead of driving to major viewpoints, take a slow walk through the village of Barbote. You’ll see traditional farming, meet the local community, and find quiet spots in the tea gardens where you won’t see another tourist for hours. It’s the ultimate way to experience the authentic Ilam lifestyle.

2. Sunrise at Shree Antu (The Local Way) 🌅

While Shree Antu is popular, the true magic is in the timing and the spots only locals know. We recommend skipping the main tower and heading to the smaller ridges nearby for a more private view of the Kanchenjunga range turning gold.

3. Mai Pokhari: The Sacred Lake 🦢

Located about 15km from Ilam Bazar, this high-altitude wetland is a place of deep spiritual and ecological importance. It’s quiet, mystical, and home to rare species like the Himalayan Newt. It’s a perfect spot for meditation and nature photography.

4. Small-Scale Tea Factory Tours 🍵

Instead of visiting the massive commercial factories, we prefer taking our guests to small, family-run tea processing units. Here, you see the “orthodox” tea-making process up close, where much of the work is still done by hand with incredible precision.

5. Sandakpur: The Highest Point 🏔️

For those with a bit more time, a trip to Sandakpur on the border of Ilam and India offers a view of four of the world’s five highest peaks (Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu). It’s a rugged journey, but the “Roof of Ilam” view is life-changing.

💡 Local Tip:

The best way to see these spots is to stay with a local family who can arrange transport, guide you through the trails, and tell you the stories behind the landmarks.
